to two dollars per week. There is a scarcity of labor
because most of the single men have gone to war, and now
an additional three hundred thousand have been called
out. God only knows when this deplorable war which is
ravaging the country will end. I believe this is the
greatest war the world has ever seen—almost every day
thousands fall in battle. I doubt that the South can hold out
much longer, because it is surrounded on all sides. But
all this is in the hands of the Lord. The prices of textiles
have risen four fold since the outbreak of the war.
Clothing is expensive. But land is cheap, partly because of
the number of men in the army and partly because many
are going on unimproved land, where every man can take
up 160 acres free, the only condition being a residence of
five years. This law has been approved by our president.
Many have departed for the gold fields, where they make
lots of money—at least some do. Jonas August from
Stallarp has been there. He returned sometime ago with four
thousand dollars in gold. If he knows how to take care
of it, he will get along. Uncle John’s family is well. They
send their regards. His oldest son-in-law is to be married
this Christmas. Uncle Sandahl in Andover was quite ill
when I was there. They have all been in poor health. I
believe they are living in an unhealtful place. They
intend to move next spring.

We have installed an organ in our church. We are
much pleased with it, because it reminds us of Sweden.
We have an excellent preacher, and are privileged to hear
the preaching of the pure word of God among us. God
grant that we may so live in this world that some day we
may meet at the right hand of Jesus in heaven, where
there is neither sorrow nor death. May the merciful God
protect us all. Kindly remember us to all our relatives,
including father and mother and our cousins. We send
greetings to our grandparents and all acquaintances, but
above all you are most heartily greeted by your son-in-law,
daughter, and their children.

We are yours faithfully until death,

                                Oliver [and Mary Helena] Stephenson.
