Om drifisen i Norra Atlanten

Recognizing the scientific and practical importance of knowing
the yearly variations in the extent, form, and amount of drift-ice,
the Congress urgently appeals to the hydrographic and
meteorological institutions of all countries whose maritime commerce
traverses regions where drift-ice; occurs to institute international
observations, and unify the results by communicating them to a central
office. The Danish Meteorological Institute in Copenhagen is
indicated as the most appropriate centre for collecting data as to ice
in the northern seas. The Congress, therefore, appeals to other
similar institutes, (1) to induce the masters of vessels to undertak e
observations on drift-ice; (2) to provide ship-masters with special
forms for recording observations as supplied by the Danish
Meteorological Institute; (3) to urge on the ship-masters the importance
of filling up these forms and posting them at the first opportunity,
either direct to Copenhagen, or through the corresponding
institution in their own country.

Vid en fest, som gafs å Saltsjöbaden för de utländska
medlemmarne af den internationella hydrografiska konferensen i
Stockholm 1899, yttrade en talare, att man kunde bedöma nationerna
efter deras polarforskning. Skulle man bedöma Danmark ur den
synpunkten, finge man antagligen sätta betyget lågt, ty i den
egentliga polarforskningen har Danmark tagit ringa del. Man har
i detta land aldrig ansett det för en nationel hederssak att
upptäcka nordpolen eller sydpolen eller att slå rekordet i uppnående
af höga breddgrader. Danmark äger hvad som finnes af land på
dessa höga latituder och känner sig tryggt i sin besittning. Det
mottager med en gästfrihet, som blifvit namnkunnig, alla dessa
förbitågande polarfarare, förser dem med vägvisare, kol,
»konebaade» och hundar och synes ej ha något att invända mot att
