developed in all its luxuriance. The mosses and lichens certainly
are partly or perhaps mainly the same species brought back by
the Belgian Expedition;1 of the four kinds of liverworts (40), three
are also common to South Georgia; one is a new species (from
South Shetlands).

On the Astrolabe Island only very slight spots were bare;
here grew Placodium and Lecanora species. Mosses were quite

lacking. On Cape Roquemaurel the vegetation was almost as
poor. Cape Kjellman, on the same coast, showed a richer
vegetation: some kinds of mosses were collected from the cracks and
crevices of the steep rocks, though occurring sparingly. The lichens
luxuriated with two Krørø-species, sulphurea and another, not known
to me, perhaps the trachycarpa (Stirt.) Müll. Arg., Mastodiâ tesselata
Hook, fil., etc. Here I also observed not few tufts of moss
lying-loose on the snow or earth, and I afterwards learnt that birds,
especially seagulls, use them for making their nests and by so doing
