CARL SKOTTSBERG.

The aspect of the Falklands is extremely monotonous: a flat,
boggy grassland \Cortaderia pilosa (Urv.) Hack.], vast swamps with
Astelia, Oreobolus, Rostkovia and Marsippospermum, etc., or a heath
of Empetrum rubrum with rough round balls of Bolax glebaria. Other
remarkable heathplants are Pernettya pumila, Pratia repens Gaud.,
Baccharis magellanica Pers., Luzula alopecurus Desv., Gunner a
magellanica Lam., SisyrinckiumfilifoliumGa.ua., Oxalis enneaphylla
Cav., Callixine marginata Lam., Hieracium antar cticum Urv., Chabroa
suave olens DC., etc.

Fig. 5. Bolax glebaria on Falkland Islands.

On the West Island the ground is more uneven; between
the hills are shelter for shrubs of Chiliotrichum, reaching the height
of man.

It deserves to be mentioned that not a few plants are common
to the Falklands and the Fuegian rainforest, but more or less
wanting in the summergreen zone, for instance Anagallis
alterni-folia Cav., Blechnum magellanicum (Desv.) Mett., Donatia fascicularis
Först., Dr oser a uniflora Willd., Gaultheria microphylla (Först.)
