place through another tube not shown in the fig. Even when filled
with the envelope of water, the weight of the apparatus is not so
great that it cannot easily be carried about by means of a metal
handle attached by corresponding loops to the outside of the box.

As the objects of my experiments I used cut-off leaves, the stalks

of which were introduced into narrow glass tubes, filled with water. ’

Tube (gl) serves for the introducing and withdrawing of the leaf from
the apparatus. This latter tube is of glass, has a diameter of about
4 cm. and a length of about 15 cm., and is firmly fixed by means
of cork and paraffin into a somewhat wider metal tube. Into the
outer end of the tube there is filted a rubber stopper (r,), through

ihe middle of which runs a rod (R) of galvanised iron, 3 mm. thick.
This rod is provided with a handle, and can be slowly pushed
backwards and forwards through the stopper (cf. II and III). The
other end of the rod is threaded through another rubber stopper
(rj), which fits the inner end of the glass tube and closes this her-
melically when the rod is withdrawn.

The object of experiment (x) is attached by means of small rubber
rings to the iron rod. When the rod is pushed into position I, the
leaf is therefore within the assimilation-chamber: when the rod is
withdrawn in the position II, the leaf is enclosed in the glass tube
