further rise in the CO, concentration the intensity of assimilation
remains constant.

It is however my opinion that the limit often depends upon the
closure of the stomata. In Oxalis, for example, one series of ex-
periments shows a limit at 4 mg. CO, assimilation. In another
series the limit was not reached even at a rate of assimilation of
about 7 mg. (see Table V and fig. 5).

Illustrations of the statements mentioned will be seen in the
curves for Nasturtium palustre and Viola at E light, for Oxalis at
ca. 4; light, and for Oxalis, Slellaria nemorum and Melandrium rubrum
at 5 light. These curves show a very good agreement with the
curves found for Elodea and Fontinalis by BLACKMAN and SMITH
(1911, p. 392, fig. I).

Whether the rising arm of the curve should be considered mathe-
malically as a straight line or as part of a curve very flat in the
initial portion, cannot with certainty be decided either in regard
to BLACKMAN and SwirH’s experiments or to mine. To decide this,
very numerous experiments with particularly pure material would
be required. It may very well be that the statement made about
