that time the only Swedish periodical published in
America. Late in the summer of 1856 a man whose
identity is unknown wrote the following words, which
reveal the keen interest of the Swedish settlers in the
political situation in Kansas and their accurate insight
into the trend of events: “Jag tycker mycket wäl om
landet. Det är ett wackert land. Vi hafwa frid för det
närvarande, men huru länge, är svårt att säga. Dock det
beror på Norden, till hwilken vårt hopp om hjälp står.
Blir Fremont wald, så är Kanzas fri; segrar Buchanan
så måste vi kämpa för wår frihet.”[1]
Hemlandet exerted a powerful influence on this
early westward migration. It related in considerable
detail the developments of the struggle to make Kansas
a free State and encouraged colonization there. In 1857
it made this statement. “Emigrationen till Kanzas är
fortfarande starkare än åt annat håll. En landsman i
Kanzas har tillskrifwit oss, att fyra-femtedelar af landets
inbyggare tros wara fristatsmän... Han tror, att
landsmän, som flytta dit, ej skola ångra sig, men råder att
göra det i större sällskap.”[2] The same year it made
this astounding statement regarding the resources of
Kansas, “Kanzas tros med sin stora fruktbarhet kunna
föda 150 millioner människor.”[3] But six weeks later
it assumed a more conservative attitude and said, “Några
Swenskar äro redan bosatta der och berömma landet
mycket, hwilket dock icke är owanligt att höra om hwad
plats som hälst.”[4]
Perhaps the most interesting and instructive picture
of conditions in Kansas given us by any of these early
