TRAVELING IN THE FAR WEST IN 1862

Elk City, Washington Territory, August 12, 1862.

Dear Wife and Darling Child. God bless, protect and
keep you... A long time of grace has passed by since I
wrote you the last time, on the 17th of June. A few days
after that we left the state road; and there has been no
possibility to send any letter since then, until we came
to the best mailing place. And yesterday we happily won
that victory... This has been my greatest worry, that it
has taken such a long time before I could send you a few
lines, .for I know that it has been a long time for you to
wait, and perhaps many anxious thoughts... The night
between the second and the third of this month I had
such a horried dream, just like the one I had when little
Emma died. I dreamt that Mary was dead; and I woke
up and dreamt the same thing more than fifteen times;

and this has made me sad Now I must begin as to

where we celebrated Midsummer. On the 23d (of June)
we came to Green River, and left there on the 25th. The
water was so high that it extended almost half a mile
from the river. We had to pull the wagons in water and
mud until we came to the ferry-boat. Then we took them
over first and the horses and mules afterwards—for
five and a half dollars a pair. Thereupon we crossed
many smaller creeks and streams. On the 1st of July we
came to a little river called Tom’s Fork. There was
neither bridge nor boat so that we had to use the wagon
boxes as boats and afterwards swim the horses and mules
across; but that river was not so broad, to be sure. On
July 4 we came to two wonderful springs. The first one
was away up on a mountain which had big cracks in it.
In many places were round holes like bowls where the
water was boiling up. It was so warm that it was just
