believe that they got any, for some went back and went
around to Oregon and California, They bought some
wagons for little or nothing; and those who could not sell
smashed them up to make packing cases out of, and the
rest they burnt up... We sold our wagon and harness for
20 dollars, a pretty good price. We came to Lemhi on
July 20 and left on the 24th. Then out among the
mountains, with our packs on our backs, and not knowing if we
could get anywhere or not, or how far it was. But just
as we were ready to go, there came two from that
direction, and they told us a little about the way, and how far
it was; and they told us the truth... It was 300 miles,
and the worst kind of road that any one could travel...
Those terrible mountains and lillls that we have travelled
over! There were many in our company who had seen
a great deal of the world; tut they said that they had never

and some mules lay dead along the way. Some had given
up and could not go any further; some had rolled down
the mountain-sides and broken their legs. Our mules have
stood it well, but they grew a little thinner the latter part
of the way. But 15 miles before we came to this place
there was a big plain, with the finest grass, almost, that
I have ever seen. We stopped there three days, and they
improved wonderfully. Some of the company went back
there with their animals later, and we sent ours along...
We pay two dollars a month to the one who takes care
of them.

Now I will try to tell you a little about the mines...
As far as I can see, the prospects are poor... I don’t
believe they make anything on most of the places so that
they are able to hire anybody... And I believe most of
them are leaving their claims. ...There were 3
Americans who worked together with a Swede, and they left,
so now we have entered the same claim, John and I, so
that we are three Swedes now. We bought the Americans’
share in the sluice boxes for 10 dollars. This is a river
