Schellenberg’s Story
began to speak about the Allies’ propaganda
against himself in connection with the
concentration camps. “The whole thing is senseless. It won’t
in any case make any difference to me, but you
must not believe this propaganda. It isn’t true.”
I cannot describe in detail the events of the
following days. Hitler’s birthday passed without
event. On April 21st you had another meeting
with Himmler. During this time Himmler was
complaining to me that his health was not any
too good, and I noticed how nervous and strained
he was. “Schellenberg,” he said to me on one
occasion, “I am filled with horror at the thought
of what is now coming.” Another time he told
me what he would do when power was in his
hands. He requested me the same evening to
propose a name for the new party that it had been
suggested he found. I proposed “Party of National
Unity.” Himmler then took up the question of
the liquidation of Hitler, but only in vaguely
allusive terms.
On the night of April 23rd–24th there was
another meeting between you and Himmler in
