completely lost in the woods. At length, however, after
wandering about in various directions, he perceived an Indian
hut, and hastened towards it, in order to inquire his way
home. The Indian said, »The place which you speak of, is
at a great distance, so that you cannot possibly reach it
tonight, and if you attempt to stay in the woods, you will be
eaten up by the wolves; but you are welcome to remain with
me till morning, if you please». — This kind offer was
thankfully accepted, and the Indian boiled some venison for his
guest, mixed him some rum and water, and, after supper,
spread some deer-skins on the ground for him to sleep on,
whilst he himself and another Indian retired to a different
part of the hut. — In the morning, the Indian and his
companion awaked the gentleman, and offered to show him the
way to his plantation. Accordingly they walked before him,
with their guns, till they came about a mile off the place.
The Indian stepping before the gentleman, asked if he did
not know him? »I believe I have seen you, was the reply».
»Yes», rejoined the inmate of the woods, »you have seen
me at your own door, and I now will give you a piece of
advice. If, in future, a poor Indian who is hungry, thirsty,
and weary, should ask you for a little refreshment, do not
say to him, »Go away you Indian dog».

44. Miss Locke, and lier Pupils Fanny and Clara
Montague. (Dialocjue the 8th.)

Miss Locke. Good morning dear children, I am very
glad to see you up so early this bright morning, we shall
have time for a long walk before breakfast.

Clara. I want so much to see the young calf, may we
not go to the farm ?

Miss Locke. Yes, if you like. Bring your basket,
perhaps we shall find some eggs. Come along. There are two
calves, and they are in the small cow-house.

Fanny. When did you see them, Miss Locke?

Miss L. I saw them last evening, as I was returning
from widow Wells. Do not open the door too wide, Clara.

Clara. Oh the pretty creatures! look how this one is
licking my hand, and there lies the gentle mother in the
corner.

Fanny. Fasten the door, Clara, it was bolted.

Clara. Now 1 must pick some cabbage leaves for my
pet cow. There she is by the pond in the field. This way
is the shortest.

Fanny. No, no, Clara, I do not like to pass that
turkey-cock, he is so fierce.
