Clara. He is in reality very cowardly. Now see, when
I take up this little stick, how he runs away and leaves the
little turkey-poults to take care of themselves.
Miss L. He is like those persons who boast of their
courage, they seldom have much in reality.
Clara. I only see ten cows, where is the other?
Fanny. Near the sheep. Look how those lambs are
frisking about.
Miss L. Look, children, there is an egg under the hedge.
Fanny. How white those geese are! What a number
of goslings.
Miss L. Take care, Clara, the old gander is looking
veiy angry, because you are touching his goslings.
Fanny. They are not as pretty as chickens. Here are
the ducks waddling after us.
Miss L. That drake is a beautiful bird. There is John
returning from exercising the horses.
Fanny. Then it is about seven o’clock. We shall have
time to go into the lane to seek for some groundsel for the
canaries.
Clara. Here are the new pig-sties, how large they are!
Fanny. Look at that lark, how high he soars, 1 cannot
see him now, can you?
Clara. No, but J can hear him. What a strange thing
that a skylark always builds on the ground.
Miss L. Now watch him, he is descending and singing
to his mate as he comes home.
Fanny. Now he ceases to sing, and has alighted close
to the nest.
Clara. How wonderful that, though he lias soared so
high, he has not lost sight of the nest.
Miss L. The poet Wordsworth says, he is a
»Type of the wise, ivho soar bid never roam».
Clara. Here comes mamma, Fanny, let us run to meet
her, I will have the first kiss.
45. Miss Locke, Fanny and Clara. (Dialogue the 0th.)
Miss Loclce. To-morrow the children are coining, we
must think of what we shall do to amuse them.
Fanny. I suppose we must play games in the afternoon,
and dance in the evening.
Clara. What game shall we have first? Blindman’s
buff, or hunt the slipper, or — —
Fanny. I do not think mamma will like us to play at
hunt the slipper, it is such a romping game, and George H.
is such a rough, rude boy. Finding the ring is much prettier
than hunting the slipper.
