CHAPTER I.
Partiality and Inaccuracy of Travellers considered—Mode of
Travelling in Sweden delineated, and compared with that in other
Countries—Journey from Helsingburg to Gothenburg—Warberg:
Anecdotes of General Peckling—Gothenburg: a Description of the
Town, its Population and Commerce—The Inhabitants of
Gothenburg, their Manners and Customs.
Partiality and inaccuracy are common objections made
to travellers, and often diminish, or even annihilate, that
approbation which otherwise might be bestowed upon their labours
and exertions. The first of those charges is of a moral nature,
and relates to a failing of the heart; the second aims at a fault,
which either proceeds from indolence or ignorance. But these
articles of accusation, when exhibited, are not always founded
upon truth: and, before a decisive opinion can be given, the credit
of the person who accuses should be carefully balanced against the
