vinces. The higheft of thefe {cholarfhips amount to the value of
fourteen or fifteen pounds per annum. The ftudents of Upfala
are not given to riot and rudenefs, but in general purfue their
{tudies with decency and diligence. This univerfity is not with
out juftice accounted the firft feminary of the North, and has pro-
duced from time to time men eminent in every branch of the
f{ciences. The famous botanical garden is {mall, but laid out with
judgment.
The univerfity of Abo was founded in 1640;. by queen Chrif-
tina, and endowed with the fame privileges as that of Upfala. Of
theology there are three profeffors, and one affiftant profeffor: of
law, one profeffor: of medicine, three profeffors, and two affiftant
profeffors: of philofophy, nine profeffors, and three affiftant pro-
feffors. In the faculty of theology there are, befides the profeffors,
two teachers, or magifiri docentes; in that of philofophy, befides
-the profeffors, nine teachers. Of elegant and genteel accomplifh-
ments, there are four profeflors, or artium cultiorum magifiri, viz. a
French mafter, a dancing mafter, a fencing mafter, and a mufic
matter.
On the Swedifh univerfities in general, it is to be obferved,
ift, That the number of profeffors, affiftant profeffors and teachers,
called magiftri docentes, bears a greater proportion, if I am not mif-
taken, to the population of Sweden (which does not exceed three
millions) than that of any other country in Europe, to the num-
ber of its inhabitants. 2dly, That although polemical divinity
and the logics of Ariftotle, with correfponding and nugatory dif-
