importation of falt amounts on an average to almoft ten thoufand
tons; it is brought from the Mediterranean, and particularly from
Spain.
Under the head of manufactures come two faw-mills, two corn-
mills, three fulling-mills for ftuffs of wool and linen cloth; a
tobacco manufactory, and three dying houfes. The public revenue
produces eight thoufand rix dollars per annum. Uleaborg fends
four fhips to the Mediterranean, which return laden with diferent
articles, but principally falt. Befides thefe, there are other veffels
employed in freightage. :
Jn the iflands at the mouth of the river are two or three docks
for -building fhips, where about fix veflels every year of different
fizes are conftruated. The port of Uleaborg is a very bad one :-
the. shipping i 1S obliged to remain in the road about two Englith
miles ftom the. town, and to load and unload by means of lighters.
The road itfelf is every year more and more filled up with fand
and gravel.
In the year 1600, Uleaborg was sifted oe Charles IX.; in 1618
by Guftavus. Adolphus ; in 1694, by Charles XI. ; and. in 1752,
by Adolphus Frederic. It was attacked by the Rudianesin 1408,
1517, 1589, and 1592. In 1714, and 1743, it Masiirercd with
particular feverity by thofe invaders, and almoft ruined,
There are at Uleaborg fome mineral {prings, and valobuditarians
come hither for the purpofe of drinking the waters. In the year
1799, there were among thefe but three or four foreigners, which,
when contrafted with the, multiplicity _ of thofe who refort to,
Spa, and other places on the continent, makes this place ‘appear.
