“¢ Hac feribebat ad Jukasjerviam rediens ex Torniavenfi lacu Aubris
*¢ de la Motraye, Magne Britanniz fubditus, 13 Junii, 1718.”
Mr. Motraye feems to have been a traveller of confequence.
It appears from his biographer, that he lived in particular habits
of friendfhip with Charles the XIIth, king of Sweden. When he
printed his Travels in England, he does not feem to have been
quite pleafed with his infcription at Jukasjervi, which is neither
verfe nor profé (as he would make us believe that he wrote it
extempore), and he has altered it in the following manner :—=
*¢ Me genetrix tenuit bis denis amplius annis,
s¢ Gallia, me Italia, Africa terra, Britannica regna,
s Ambe Afiz, Melite fterili vicina Cofyre,
