when we were there was bellis perrennis; but the following grow
in the neighbourhood : berberis vulgaris, corylus avellana, tulipa,
narciffas, agquilegia, torpeolum, peonia, dianthas, ribes.
We again changed horfes at Frankila, a village confifting of a
few wooden houfes, nine miles from Kukko. We faw here fome
women whofe looks were mild and rather agreeable; the chil-
dren too of a good appearance; but we were firuck at the fight of
their bread, which is made of two thirds ftraw, cut very {mall,
and one third of meal. From Frankila you fee at a diftance the
mountain Nivavara, where ftill remains the fignal poft which the
French academicians ereCted on its fummit to affift in their tri-
gonometrical operations.
After Frankila you change horfes Korpicula (korpi fignifies a
wood, ku/a place), a diftance of about eight miles. In this place
the river Tornea forms a bafon of tranquil and gentle water,
which fucceeds the boifterous tumult of a fall or cafcade, called
Matkakofki. The river prefents no pleafing view in this vicinity.
We found in a houfe hard by fome peafants employed in making
their fithing nets; there was one who fmoked from fo fhert rs
pipe, that my companion remarked it, faying to me in Ttahan,
che piccola pippa. The Finlander who was {moaking, underftood
perfectly our Italian, and repeated as he turned round to us, laugh-
ing, picco pippo, picco pippo ; ie denoting in Finlandifh the fame
as piccola in Italian.
Hight miles from Korpicula is the church of Kirkomeki (kirko
fisnifying church, mek, a hill), fituated upon an eminence. About ©
