f{cene of defolation; the ruggednefs of the dark gray rock is not
covered by a fingle fhrub; the only mufic is the hoarfe mur-
muring of the waves, ever and anon renewing their affaults on
the huge mafles that oppofe them. The northern fun, creeping
at midnight at the diftance of five diameters along the horizon,
and the immeafurable ocean in apparent contaét with the fkies,
form the grand outlines in the fublime picture prefented to the
aftonifhed fpectator. The inceffant cares and purfuits of anxious
mortals are recollected as a dream; the various forms and energies
of animated nature are forgotten; the earth is contemplated only
in its elements, and as conftituting a part of the folar fyftem.
