15 Kil. Aardal (*/nn, unpretending and moderate"),
commanding a fine view of the gaards of Myklebostad. — A little heyond
Aardal we pass the new church of Helgheim. Opposite opens the
Kjøsnasfjord (6 Engl. M. long"), at the E. end of which lies the
gaard of Lunde (pass to Fjærland, see p. 115). To the N. of the
Kjesnæsfjord rises the Bjørg a (5510 ft.) and to the S. the
Søg-nesandnipa (4965 ft.).
At the upper end of the lake is Øvre Väsenden or Skei.
Travellers in the reverse direction who fail in procuring horses here
should proceed by boat instead of on foot.
The road now surmounts a small watershed and then leads to
the N. through a broad valley, containing the Føglevand and the
Skredevand, the amount of water in which varies considerably.
To the E. the Fosheimfos descends from the Bjenrga (see above). The
scenery becomes really fine when we reach the Bolscetvand,
beyond which lie the Stnrdal and several glaciers of the Jostedalsbræ.
Pedestrians who are willing to forego a visit to the Bredheimsvand
may proceed from skei by the good skyds-road (no tariff; arrange
beforehand) to the E., through th> Stard’al, to Aamot (bad quarters, at
Tolleif Aamot’s), and walk thence (with a guide, arrange terms
beforehand) across the Oldenskar (6130 ft.) to Rusteen (good quarters), at the
end of the Oldenvand (p. 193). This expedition, through magnificent
scenery, should be undertaken only by practised walkers (2 hrs. to the
foot of the Aamotbrae, 2 hrs. to its highest point; and about Vj-i hr.
more for the steep and fatiguing descent). — This tour is better done in
the opposite direction, as the difficult ascent from Maelkevold to the top
of the pass comes first, ■and the rest of the way to Aamot is a gradual
descent while the poor quarters at Aamot may be avoided. The stages
are as follows : from Oldøreu to Eide, or by boat across the Oldenvand to
Rustøen, 2Vs hr3.; thence (with guide) via Mælkevold to the top of the fjeld
(steep and difficult), l3/i hr.; to the head of the pass, lh hr.; to the
Aamot-bræ, lVc hr.; to Aamot, lVi hr. A guide is indispensable between the pass
and Mælkevold (in either direction), but eannot always be found at Aamot.
Another magnificent valley is the Vaatedal, which runs parallel to
the Bredhtimsvand on 1he E. and is reached by a somewhat toilsome path
from the Stardal. From Egge, at the end of this path, a road leads to
Moldestad (p. 183) or Red.
From Aamot a comparatively easy pass leads across the Jostedalsbræ
to Langedalen and on to Solvorn (p. 1Ö3) or Fjærland (p. 114).
The beautiful but hilly road now follows the bank of the
Storelv and then skirts the small Paulsvnnd. The Skjorta (4090 ft.) is
here conspicuous to the 5V. To the right, shortly before
reaching Ferde, we pass the precipitous Kupenaava1 the valley below
which is strewn with huge blocks of rock.
16 Kil. (pay for 19) Førde i Bredheim (telegraph-station), a
poor hamlet, lies near the S. end of the ^Bredheimsvand, or
Breumsvand (200 ft.; 900 ft. deep), here called the Førdefjord, a
magnificent lake about 10 Engl. M. in length, enclosed by
imposing mountains. Comp, the Maps. pp. 108, 16S. ■— The road
terminates here, at a lofty old moraine, and we proceed either in a
rowing-boat or by one of the steamers mentioned on next page. To
the left rises the precipitous Skjorta, with the Uamledalsfos, to the
right the dizzy heights of the Svenskenipa (4770 ft.). The Myklands-
