the river Lagaå (p. 289) issues. The long island of Bohnsjo, onee the seat of
the heathen kings of Finveden, as W.Småland is ealled, contains several
interesting tombstones.

From Vis lax da to Karlshamn, 78 Kil. (481/ 2 Engl. 31.), railway in
hrs. (fares 5 kr. 50, 3 kr. 55 0.). „The train traverses a hilly and
wooded tract, and soon reaches Lake Asnen (450 ft.), a large sheet of
water, the bays of which it repeatedly crosses. Beyond Ulfö it crosses
to an island in the lake and then recrosses to the mainland, where the
country becomes more level. Beyond Ryd we enter the valley of the
Jförrumsä. The scenery improves as the sea is approached, and is very
pleasing at Asarurn, the station before Karlshamn.

78 Kil. (48’/2 31.) Karlshamn {Stadshuset, in the Kungs-Gata •, Gibraltar,
on the quay), at the mouth of the Mica in the pretty district of Blekinge,
with 6800 inhab., erected into a town and re-named in 1668. The
Klockstapel, or belfry, a stone tower adjoining the church, was erected at the
end of the 18th cent., and is sometimes ealled Karlshamns Fafänga
(Karlshamn’s vanity’), as on completion it was found uneqnal to bearing
the weight of the bells. — A very pleasant excursion may be taken to
the Asarumsdal and the Offerkälla (‘sacrificial spring’), and to Strömma
and Rosenboi’g, whence we may return by Tubbaryd. — About 7-8 Kil. to
the X. E. of the town is an artificial hill composed of hnge stones, called
the Valhall, probably an Attestupci, or place from which old and infirm
persons used to throw themselves in ancient times in order to avoid the
supposed ignominy of dying in their beds.

To the right lies the long .1 Föckeln-Sjij (445 ft.). To the left,
between (46b Kil.) Liatorp and (4S4 Kil.) Elmhult, the last station
in Småland, lies Rashult. the birthplace of Linnaeus (13th May.
17U7), whose father was the pastor here at that time, but soon
afterwards removed to the neighbouring parish of Stenbrohult. An
obelisk was erected here in 1866 to the great naturalist’s memory.

493 Kil. (306 31.) Killeherg is the first station in Skåne, and
the train now gradually descends into a more smiling region.
Beyond Oushy, Hästreda, and Balingslöf, we reach —

535 Kil. (332 M.) Hessleholm (Jernvägs-Hotellet; Railway
Restaurant), an increasing place, at the junction of several railways.
To the 4V. lies Lake Finja (150 ft.).

From Hessleholm to Helsingborg, see p. 388.

From Hessleholm to Christianstad, 30 Kil. (18’/2 Engl. 31.). railway
in 1> 4 hr. (fares 2 kr. 10, 1 kr. 5 5.). This railway traverses a well
cultivated district and passes a number of unimportant stations. Beyond
Kar-paluncl, where a branch-line diverges to (35 Kil.) Degeberga and the
seaport of Åhus, it crosses the Helgea and reaches —

30 Kil. Christianstad (Stadshuset; Frimurarelogen; Jernvägs-Hotellet),
the capital of Xorra Skåne, founded in 1614, with 9700 inhab., and the
seat of the governor and the district courts, which are established in the
Kronhus. The town is pleasantly situated on a peninsula in the Sjövik,
a lake formed by the Helgea. The principal edifice is the Church, erected
in 1617. At thg mouth of the Helgea, on the island of Alio, 14 Kil. to
the S.E., lies Ahus, the seaport of Christianstad.

The Railway from Christianstad to Sölvesborg (31 Kil. in l1/! hr.-,
fares 2 kr. 30, 1 kr. 45 o.) is a narrow-gauge line (3l/s ft-)- traversing a
somewhat uninteresting district. About 3’2 Engl. 31. to the X. of
Fjelk-inge lies the Oppman na sjö, with the pleasant estate of Karlsholm on its
W. bank. 13 Kil. Beckaskog, the next station, derives its name from the
old chateau of Beckaskog, beautifully situated 2 Engl. 31. to the X., on
a narrow tongue of land between the Oppmannasjö and the Ifösjö. It
was originally a Bernardine monastery and now belongs to the crown.
Charles XV. frequently visited this spot, and has composed verses in its
praise. On the //<;, an island in the lake, are the Vgnsmvnnar (‘oven-
