THE ARMY AWAKENS 85
Gleamed through the sparkling leaves
A helmet now,
Now a spear or a shield,
The watchful spies of the foe
Found they concealed.
Then was there war-cry and leaping,
Arrows rang on the tree-trunks,
Branches were broken, and in,
Forcing the densest thickets,
Or over the sodden marsh,
Onward,
Every man they surrounded,
Hewing him down,
Resuming their march in peace.
When they broke forth from the forest,
Wet, but spirited,
Stiklestad lay
Before their view.
Raised on a height in the sunshine,
Mighty and broad,
Was Verdalen’s noblest farmstead.
Pearled with dew were the fields.
Tethered horses
Stood on the glistening stubble,
At the side
Were the great houses,
Undivided and stoneless
Stretched the lush meadow.
