the closing of the London theatres, by the victorious Puritans in 1642. Sir
William Davenant (d. 1668), represented in our collection amongst others
by a masque play »Salmacida Spolia» from the year 1639, became later on
the reviver of English drama, which however became changed in character
at the Restoration.

It only remains to be mentioned one more masque — the loose
pamphlet — namely the famous »Comus», written by John Milton 1634 for
Lord Bridgewater’s festival at Ludlow castle, and which was put to music
by England’s most renowned composer of that time. It is Milton’s most
beautiful pastoral play, and is to be found here in its earliest edition, that
of the year 1637 — a rarity of the first rank.
