INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL

FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND DANISH PUBLIC LIBRARIES

By

ROBERT L. HANSEN, Copenhagen

IT IS ALREADY a classical saying among Danish Public Librarians:
That English and American library ideas became incorporated in the
Danish library work from that evening, the 7th March 1893, when
the post brought to A. S. Steenberg of Horsens, at the time assistant teacher
and later the Grand Old Man of Danish Public-Library work, the Viennese
Professor Edw. Reyer’s book »Volksbibliotheken».

One certainly can not say that they marched in with a full band
play-ing, for a long time it was only muff led sounds behind the scenes — and
these were not very beautiful —, but the music was consistant, until at
last the audience called for them to come forward into the orchestra in full
sight. But 25 years had certainly passed before one reached thus far, 25
years during which Steenberg continually obtained renewals of the repertory
and new encouragement for himself from like-minded in other European and
American countries.

It is worth while, ön such an occasion, to note which were the countries
and persons who gained an influence upon our Public-Libraries’ leading men
and gradually, through them, upon the whole expansion and arrangement
of our Public-Library System; and to see from this what we received, how
we re-moulded it, and what we later could pass on to others.

Although Steenberg in 1893 had already for some years worked at
plans for the extension of the existing libraries it can be taken for granted
