REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON EXCHANGE OF LIBRARIANS.
By Dr. W. W. Bishop, Ann Arbor.
Dear Dr. Sevensma,
–––-— Will you please note, for the records of exchanges, the fact that between
the Deutsche Bücherei of Leipzig and. the Merriam Library of Framingham,
Massachusetts, an exchange has been efïected Fräulein Richard, of the Deutsche Bücherei,
is in the Framingham Public Library for the year, and Miss Carolyn A. Walker is
work-ing at the Deutsche Bücherei. I think this a very practical example of exchange, as I
understand that both of these ladies are in active service.
With reference to students, let me call to your attention the fact that Dr. Ricardo
Matta is studying in the Department of Library Science in the University of Michigan
in training for work in the Vatican Library, at the expense of the Carnegie Endowment
for International Peace. Dr. Matta is taking special work under Professor Mann and
is also working part time in the Classification Department of this Library. Of course
his work in this Department is for expérience. We are, however, entrusting him with
the simpler routine work so that he is doing just the sort of thing which he will have
to do when he gets back to Rome.
Miss Ellen Rolf sen, from the Foreign Office Library of Oslo in Norway, is
working in the Classification Department of this Library as one of the «Industrial» fellows
of the Scandinavian-American Foundation. We are paying her full salary, but she
comes under the auspices of the Scandinavian-American Foundation as an «Industrial»
fellow so that there is no question of our immigration laws.
The Carnegie Endowment has likewise granted a fellowship for the current year
to Miss Margaret S. Demchevsky, of Sofia, Bulgaria. Miss Demchevsky will shortly
come to America for the purpose of visiting libraries here. Her itinerary has been
work-ed out by the American Library Association, through which organisation all of the
arrangements were made.
In addition, I am glad to report that the Carnegie Endowment has made a grant,
for study in an American Library School and for a visit to American libraries, to Miss
Maria Teresa Chavez, Librarian of the Biblioteca «Cervantes» in Mexico. Miss Chavez
expects to visit a number of American Libraries and to study in one of the American
Library schools beginning next summer.
The Carnegie Endowment has also granted a fellowship to Mr. Psao of China,
who enters the School of Library service, Columbia University, this autumn.
I believe there are also some further grants in aid of students, but at present I
have no definite information about them.
Faithfully yours,
William Warner Bishop
Chairman of Committee on Internationa!
exchange of librarians and students and
professors of library economy.
