corresponding antarctic formations. I have described above the
Litho-phyllum-lormation. But this formation is littoral as well as sublittoral,
and probably much better developed in the tidal region; the Arctic
formation of Corallinacece is sublittoral. This is very remarkable —
the large shallow basins, of a bright rosa, then remind more of the
tropical than of northern littoral vegetation. The subantarctic shore
has the same character. It is uncertain, if we have got a form Corres
ponding to the formation of Fucaccce; it is not impossible that one has
to consider the Urvillæa. (?) sp. mentioned above as constituting a
formation of that kind, but I cannot settle the question now.
My sublittoral formation of Desmarestia seems to me to correspond
pretty well to that of Laminariacece. — Owing to the loss of my
collections 1 have not been able to say very much about the associations.

of the Gerlache-channel. Microscopic, littoral vegetation.
Nr 4. uj 1 1902. Cape Roquemaurel, Louis-Philippe-peninsula. Basins
in the tidal region. Lithophyllum-formation with associations of Gracilaria
(Leptpsarca) sp. and Urospora sp.
Nr 5. 16/i 1902. 63° 36’ S., 550 48’ W. Near Paulet Island. 100
—150 m. Gravel with small stones. Elitloral vegetation, association of
Gracilaria (Lcptosarca) simplex. See above.
Nr 6. 17/t 1902. 64° 20’ S., 56° 38’ W. SE. of Seymour Island. 100
—150 m. Sand, gravel. Elittoral vegetation of very small Floritiece,
association of Schizoneura quercifolia. See abore.
Nr 7. n/2 1902. 64° 3’ S., 56° 37’ W. 360 m. (?) Clay. Pieces
of algæ, especially of Desmarestia Harveyana.
Obs. Position and depth are uncertain.
Nr 78 A. 23/n 1902. 62° 45’ S., 61° 37’ W. NW. of Snow Island.
109 m.—1,4° C. (bottom). Clay mixed with sand. Several pieces of algæ.
Nr 78 B. 23/ii 1902. Small islet close to Snow Island. Littoral
basins with Litophyllum-formaXion.
Nr 79. 2l/n 1902. 63° 2’ S., 6o° 34’ W. S. of Deception Island.
129—150 m.—1,2° C. (bottom). Volcanic sand with small stones. Three
large specimens of Desmarestia Harveyana.
