Three species of Epipactis new to Scandinavia, E. persica Hausskn.,
E. leptochila (Godt.) Godt., and E. purpurata Sm.
1. The aulhor gives an extensive review of the extra-Scandinavian literature ön
Epipactis seel. Euepipnctis. It is concluded that the different types should lie
considered as distinct species in accordance wilh the view held by e.g. Godfery.
2. The aulhor reviews the Scandinavian literature and points out that — besides
E. Helleborine and E. atrorubens — there is frequently mentioned a third,
Soutli-Scandinavian type. This passed originally in Danish literature under the
falsc name of E. microphijlla and was låter in Danish as well as in Swedish
literalure treated as E. latijolia subsp. viridiflora, E. viridiflora or E. Helleborine
var. varians. The plants described as Serapias latifolia y albens Wg. and E. media
a. floribus albis Fr. are shown to be identical too. This lype was figured already
in 1780 in »Flora danica» (tab. 811), and its difference from /•.’. Helleborine was
for the first time demonstrated in 1796 by Rafn. Steenstrup (al>. 1846) gåve
il the manuscript name E. micrantha, and Reichenbach fil. (1851 p. 148)
pointed oul ils difference from E. microphijlla, considering il as an intermediate
form between E. purpurata and bis E. viridiflora.
3. The aforesaid type is shown to be identical wilh E. persica Hausskn. (1927),
E. vectensis (T. & T. A. Stephens.) Brooke & Bose (1940), E. Troodi Lindh,
fil. (1942), E. viridiflora f. acutiflora Krösche, E. latifolia f. gracilis Dageförde,
and probably also wilh E. latifolia subsp. viridiflora var. dilatata Graber. Its
distribution extends from France and England in the West lo Iran in the East.
Ils Scandinavian distribution is shown ön lig 1.
4. The distinguishing cliaraclers ol E. persica, niosl easily seen, are the almost
total absence of hairs ön the uppermost part of the stern and ön the ovaries,
as well as the small whitish pendent flowers, which never open fully.
5. E. leptochila, which was hitherto found only in England, is shown lo grow in
a wood close lo Faaborg ön the Danish island of Funen, where it was detected
in 1939 by Mr. J. Harbou.
6. E. purpurata is published from three localities in East Jutland.
