Ihjpholoma fasciculare have formed so much mycelium llial
theassump-tion is warranted that t hese species per se are able to form a certain
though for oj)timal growth insufficieiil quanlily of lliiamin. The
addition of 50 y thiamin per 1 liter nutrient solution, however, was shown
lo induce growth to a möre or less considerahle degree in all species.
Thus, il is ohvious that under the conditions of experiment reported
all the hymenomycetes investigated in the present study form either
no thiamin or — if at all — only lo a verv inconsiderable degree. It is
reali/.ed that further investigations ön a larger scale and involving the
addition of thiamin in suboptimal quantilies (cf. X. Fries, 1938) will
he necessarv hefore the question can be definitelv clarified whether
the inabilily to form Ihis vitamin is absolute under the conditions of
experiment described.
Hypholoma fasciculare has been previouslv tested bv Schopper &
Blumer (1940). These authors have shown that this species grows
satisfactorily in a synthetic nutrient solution ön condition that thiamin
(or pyrimidin-j-thiazole) is added. These experiments, however, have
not shown whether the inability of Ihis slrain to form thiamin is
absolute.
Comparing the results reported in Ihe present paper with tliose
of the experiments made for Ihe purpose of testing the
thiamin-hetero-trophy of Swedish species of Marasmius, and whicli were previouslv
published by the writer. the conclusion seems lo be permissible thal Ihe
hymenoinyceles whicli decompose li t ter are to a verv large extenl
thia-min-heterotrophic. Ön the other hand, auxo-aulotrophy as well as
com-plete inability to form growth substances other than thiamin seem lo
be |ailly rare in Ihese organisms.
