IX. Summary.
Title: Investigations into the nutritional physioiogy of the
Chloro-phycecte wi th special reference to indole-acetic acid, ascorbic acid and
thiamin.
1. The first chapter gives a review of the lilerature on the
in-fluence of growth substances on the Chloropliyceae. Special attention is
given to soil and algal extracts and to stinudants in natural waters. The
literature 011 the influence of indole-acetic acid (heteroauxin), ascorbic
acid (vitamin C) and thiamin (aneurin, vitamin B,) is reviewed in detail.
Contradictory data are given for indole-acelic acid. Investigations 011 the
influence of ascorbic acid and thiamin are few in number. The present
work aims at giving a contribution to the nutritional physioiogy of the
Chloropliyceae with special regard to the effects of indole-acetic acid.
ascorbic acid and thiamin.
2. The algae were isolated in puré culture by current
microbiolo-gical methods. Gare was taken to conduct the experiments under
condi-tions that ensured the exclusion of all foreign organisms. Rapid and
uniform inoculation was obtained by using a special |y designed
inocula-tion tube. The cultures were suspended in a window facing the east and
were protected against direct sunlight. In the dark season artificial
illumination was used. A temperature of about 20 C was maintained.
At the end of the experiment growth was determined by the aid of a
haemocytometer and was expressed as the number of cells per c.mm.
The following Chloropliyceae were investigated: Chlorella sp. A,
Chlorella vulgaris B, Chlorella vulgaris M. Ankistrodesmus falcatus,
Scenedesmus obliquus, Scenedesmus dimorphus, Scenedesmus acuminatus,
Scenedesmus acutiformis. Scenedesmus quadricauda and Stichococcus
bacillaris. The letters designate physiological raccs. All cultures (except
Ch. vulgaris M?) are clones.
3. Botb nitrates and ammonium salls can be utilized as a source
of nitrogen. The latter in liigh concentration have a poisonous effect.
Ammonium nitrate acts as an ammonium säll. With phosphate butfer
