HENNING HORN AF RANTZIEN
5. Summary.
1. Phleum arenarium is a rather unitary species. With the exception oi’ ssp.
aegaeum Vierh. no isolated populations of anv great taxonomical or geographica!
significance seem to have been developed. Certain authors have wished lo
Unit l’hl. exaratum Griseb. (syn. Phl. graeeum Hoiss, et Heldr.) and Piil. crypsoicles
(Urv.) Hack. ssp. sardoum (Hack.) with Piil. arenarium. This arrangement cannot
he maintained. In connection with the discussion of this problem the author debates
(a) the morpliologic differences between Phl. arenarium and other Phleum forms,
especially summing up tlie morpliologic discontinuity between Ihe two subspecies
of Phl. arenarium and further between this species and Phl. himalaicum Mez;
(b) llie nomenclature of Phl. exaratum Griseb. and (c) the taxonomical position
of Phl. crypsoides within the genus and the relation between Ihe two subspecies
of that species.
2. Geographically and ecologically Phl. arenarium holds a special position
in sect. Chiloehloa, having its centre of distribution in the dunes of oceanic Western
Europé and not as most other species ol’ the section in the east of the Mediterranean
Area with the strongly marked summer-time drought characterizing this region.
From the eu-oceanic region ön the Atlantic coast of Central Europé the distribution
enters to Ihe north and soulli the sub-oceanic and eury-oceanic regions, where it
gradually becomes möre and möre split up. Consequently, the distribution in
northern Europé has a strongly SW. character. — The distribution type of Phl.
arenarium can be characterized as a Mediterranean and Atlantic one.
3. From an ecologic point of view Phl. arenarium is considered indifferent to
the influence of salt. 1! is a pronounced psammophyte with a primary occurrence
foremost ön such sand-dunes and fields of drifting sand where a closening of the
sand and a cöncentration of humus have begun in some degree. Further, it is
hemerophilous to some extent, especially in the north. The plant is in its Organization
and occurrence a xerophile. It is gypsophilous and has a slight competitive power.
