192 TYCHO NOR LINDH
Fig. 1. Approximate distribution of the li ihe Calenduleae in the Old World.
Calendula L. (......) Osteospermum L. (— –). The runge of these two genera covers
Ihe areas of the other genera in the |ribe, except Dipterocome, which extends
east-wards as far as Afghanistan, and Eriachaenium, which occurs in South America.
The Mediterranean Calendula has ils soulhernmost outliers in the Ahaggar (Hoggar)
Mountains in the Central Sahara and in the Yemen Mountains in tropica! Arabia.
In Egypt it probably extends farther south than the map indicates. The South
African Osteospermum has its northernmost outliers in Mt. Sinai and Mt. Petra in
Transjordania, thus in the distribution area of Calendula. It also occurs in the
Yemen Mountains logether with Calendula. The distribution of Osteospermum in
tropical East Africa is disjunctivc, but the gaps are in reality probably nol so large
as indicaled ön Ihe map. The occurrence of an endemic species in S:t Ilelena is
of greal interest, indicating, as it does, a verv wide distribution of the (ribe or its
ancestors during an earlier period.
