These species suggest an earlier and beller conneclion between the chief
centres of the Calenduleae. Düring a semi-arid period in tropical East Africa
O. muricatum certainlv had a continuous distribution from South Africa to the
neighbourhood of the Iled Sea and the Gulf of Aden. O. Volkensii has lo be rcgarded
as a relict of a species population which had a wide distribution in East Africa
during a pluvial period.
cephahim and Chrysanthemoides monilifera show large gaps in their
distribution according io Ihe maps ifigs. 1—4), hut in the highlands
and mountains these gaps will probably be much diminished when
this part of Africa has been möre thoroughly explored.
