is characterized by drupes, and its wide distribution is no doubt mainly due to
this excellent means of dispersal. II is probably in process of penetrating norlhwards
towards the mountains of Abyssinia.

The morphological difference ]>elween these genera is thus rather
insignificant. Also in the South African Dimorphotheca there is a
ten-dency to incurvation of the achenes (1 p. 67, figs. 4 b, d).

All the hitherto known biotypes of the Calendula species have
annulate achenes in each capitulum. In addition, anolher one or often
two of the above-mentioned achene types appears in the same head.
From what 1 have so far been able to discover through cultivation, the
various fruit combinations in Calendula are hereditary, and
conse-quently each taxonomical unit should have its own definite fruit
