between Calendula and the other genera in the tribe (I p. 20).
In the present Classification of the C<denduleae some species
re-sembling each other in habit have to be placed in different genera
owing to differences in their floral parts or achenes. As an example
of this I will mention in particular the following species: a) Castalis
nudicaulis (L.) T. Norl. and Osteospermum caulescens Harv. b)
Calendula aegyptiaca Desf. and Osteospermum calenduluceum L. f. The
1’irst two species nia v be verv similar in their vegetative characters and,
in addition, their flowers are almost the same colour. They differ,
however, in respect of the development of the styles, the fertility or
slerility of the flowers and the involucre. According to what 1 have
hitherto found, Castcdis nudicaulis produces disc achenes onlv and
Osteospermum caulescens ray achenes onlv. Further, they have
en-tirelv different distribution areas (I maps, pp. 406 and 416).
Certain forms of Calendula aegyptiaca and Osteospermum
calen-dulaceum are so similar in habit as to be easily confused. lf the achenes
