specimen seen 2.5X1 cm, areolae 0.5—0.8(1) mm large, somewhat
convex, firmly attached to Ihe earth, contiguous wilh very narrow or
indistinct cracks, surface quite smooth; marginal areolae möre
squa-muliform, somewhat free, hut hardly distinctly radiate, KOH +
blood-red. Apothecia numerous, sol it ary in eacli areola, immersed, disk 0.5—
0.7 mm across, orbicular, plane, black hut white-pruinose, margin of
the areola slightly prominent.

Apothecia ahout 0.3 mm thick ( + 0.2 mm thallus below), pale part
200 a deep, without distinct exciple. Gonidial stratum very lliick beside
the thecium and continuous below. Cortex ön upper side 25—30 |j. thick,
quite obscured and with granular, diffuse surface, in KOH translucid
with perpendicularly intricate, 4—5 u thick hyphae. Cortex and
gonidial stratum Pd+ intensely yellowish orange with mist, medulla in
KOH with rusty crystals. Medulla with granules, gradually dissolving
in HNOg, cortex unchanged. Central pale part ahout 100 [j. high, hyaline
with intricate, indistinct hyphae, lower 10—15 [j. + refracting, 1—
( = exciple). Thecium 100—110 ij., hyaline, 1+ dark blue like
hypothecium; upper 20—25 [j. brownish yellow, opaque, without visible tips.
Parapliyses in much gelatine, ahout 1.7 [j. thick, apices in KOH
subdiscrete, 4—5 [j., clavate, paler. Spores 8, dark greenish brown, 15—17 X
8—8.5 [j., wall only slightly thickened at apices, 1.7 [a, and at septum,
which is only 1 [x at centre, central lamella distinct.

California: San Diego, leg. C. R. Orcutt (IJ.). Ön earth.
A specimen from the same locality (Fink herb. no. 11228) described by
Hedrick.

/?. bolodes seems to be a unique species as well in appearance as
especiallv in chemical characters.
