Ch. tomentosa from Gotland, which proves a greal variation in this lake.
— Also specimens of Ch. tomentosa in some fresh water localities in the
neighbourhood of Stockholm show only a slight incrustation or lack it
(e.g. Bromma Kyrksjö).

It will be seen from the facts mentioned above that il is difficull
to keep the two »forms» apart, even if it only luts in view lo distinguish
fresh water localities from brackish ones. — Already Linnaf:us was
perfectly aware of the fact that the two very different forms were to
be included in one species, which he had named Ch. tomentosa — a
name that låter has been misinterpreted hy many authors and because
of which Linnaeus has been criticized. — However, Linnaeus did not
knovv the species from proper fresh water localities, hu I he had met
»f. inerustata» at some localities in Roslagen (Uppland). He enumerates
in his »Plantae Roslagicae» (in Spolia Botanica. manuscript 1729) 47
species of which number 7 is Ch. tomentosa (named with synonyms
from Rajus, Dillenius and Morisson|, and he says: »All planls from
Roslagen mentioned above are first found by me in Uppland and 1 have
given them all to Dr Celsius to include them in his Flora Uplandica»
and »Chara major subcinerea fragilis R.S. did I find al Börstel in
Roslagen in greal numbers» (orig. Swedish, see Linnaeus 1729, p[). 77, 82;
Gertz 1925, p. 131). Dr Celsius is Olof Celsius Ihe Lider, professor
and Dean of Uppsala, who was the botanical authoritv of that time in
Uppsala, and who was working at a Flora of Uppland. His work is lo
be found as two herbaria, one at Ihe Botanical Museum of the
Univer-sity of Uppsala, the other at the Botanical Department, Riksmuseum,
Stockholm, the latter with a copy of (Celsius’ original manuscript (see
Gertz 1920 and 1925). In the Uppsala copy as well as in that of
Stockholm Ch. tomentosa is found (nr 143 resp. nr 569) and the specimens
are obviously »f. inerustata» and both with the annotation: »Chara
major, subcinerea, fragilis, B. S. 132», a synonym which linnaeus
ciles in Flora Suecica hut which is not met with in Species Plantarum.
Ön the sheet in the Uppsala copy there is also annoted »at the
sea-bottom» (orig.: »på hafsbotten») (see Pl. 1.). In Celsius’ manuscript
the species is enumerated in the 17th class, » Dorsiferae et Capillares
Raji» and the synonyms according to Rajus. Dillenius and
Morisson are cited and as the Iocality, »I Börstels Sion» is stated. II will
he hard to identify the place, where Linnaeus collected the species
hut the statement may refer lo some shallow cove of the sea in Ihe
parish of Börstil in the neighbourhood of Östhammar. The presence
of Chara tomentosa »f. inerustata» in a shallow bay in this district
