pronounced oceanic climate of England Q. petraea can occur also
within areas primarily rich in lime. Salisbury & Tansley (1921) have
investigated Querceta sessiliflorae in situations of that kind. They
(p. 24) give their results in the following words:

»The most striking [feature] is the pronounced leaching which has
taken place in the surface layers of the soil. For, whilst the CaC03
content of the Wenlock Limestone varies from 60 to 74 per cent., and
that of the soil at 3 feel, between partially disintegrated rocks, from
7 to 23 per cent., the surface soil of the wood floor, especially on the
level or on gentle slopes, has a normal lime content, even after removal
of litter and raw humus, of less than one per cent. - in other words
it is what would be commonly regarded as non-calcareous soil.»

My results (figs. 8—10, table 2) as regards the culture of Q. petraea
are highly consonant with those of the field investigations. The reduced
magnitude of dry matter at increasing content of lime and rising alkaline
reaction may be interpreted as an expression of diminishing vitality.
In the cultures the sessile oak certainly survives still at the highest pH
which has been used here but in nature competition also conies in as
an important factor. Under these circumstances Q. petraea can vindicate
