Terminology in Finland

The standardization of information
Processing terminology has received a
great deal of attention in all the Nordic
countries during the last couple of
years. Work in Denmark and Norway
has proceeded along the lines set forth
in IFIP-ICC Vocabulary of Information
Processing published in 1966. This
doc-ument sets itself as a basis for
inter-national standardization to be achieved
through a faithful translation of its
terms and definitions into national
languages.
In Finland, work on a standard ADP
vocabulary is being carried out by the
Standards Committee of the Finnish
Data Processing Association. A
de-scription of the principles and aims of
the Committee’s work has been
presented in an earlier issue of
“Automatisk Databehandling” (Nr 2/1967).
The Association is predominantly a
user group. As a consequence, the
work has been oriented toward users’
needs. It was clear from the start that
the tight budget allocated for this task
did not permit both the translation of
the IFIP-ICC terms into Finnish and
the compilation of a satisfactory
col-lection of the kind of terms a typical
user needs. The IFIP-ICC goes into
great detail on the engineering and
components of primarily second
generation hardware. The typical Finnish
user in 1968 will have a third
generation machine. A more basic
considera-tion is that he no longer has to deal
with machine features directly. What
he deals with is an amorphous
“ex-tended machine” encompassing
operating systems, high level languages
and application packages, fields which
are not covered in the IFIP-ICC
vocabulary. It was felt that present-day
realities must be taken into account,
and that those who want to build
components can do it in English, at least
for the time being.
There are considerable differences
be-tween American and British (i.e.
IFIP-ICC) terminology. The majority
of computers in Finland are of
American manufacture, and this is a fact
that affects the choice of terminology
as well.
Small countries have nothing to lose
and everything to gain by international
cooperation and standardization, and
