facts that may be significant. The two
vocabulaires have about 400 terms
that are identical or nearly so. The
IFIP-IC har nearly 800 terms the
Finnish user was deemed not to
re-quire while the Finns “need” over 300
(5) . The relative hardware orientation
of IFIP-ICC is seen in groups 3 and 4.
In group 6, system operation, IFIP-ICC
provides, among other things, a
tax-onomy of the various ways Computer
centre personnel can twiddle their
thumbs while the machine is down
(“awaiting repair time”, maintenance
standby time”, “debatable time” etc.).
The Finnish VDP includes in this group
a number of operating system
concepts. Differences between British and
American usage as well as in the
ex-tent of coverage of modern 1/0
equip-ment (such as teleprocessing) would
seem to account for the considerable
lack of common terms in group 7.
In this connection, it is interesting to
note that a proposed Danish standard
ADP word list, circulated in March1967,
has translations for only about 650 of
the nearly 1 200 terms in IFIP-ICC. A
good deal of the hardware detail is
omitted.
Terminology work is being further
pur-sued by the Finnish Data Processing
Association: 1. to improve and to
ex-pand the word list, 2. to write
definitions, and 3. to develop a subject
grouping that could be used, if
neces-sary, to present terms and definitions
in the context of related terms.
In future editions of the Vocabulary,
the English-Finnish word list is going
to be presented in a form which is
here called a keyword index. It is
similar to lBM’s KWIC index format. This
is thought to be an improvement over
a plain alphabetic list in that it aids
the user who does not know exactly
what term he is looking for. A keyword
index is also a helpful working
docu-ment as it makes it easier to check
internal consistency. Figure 2 shows
a conventional word list, taken from
the first edition of the Finnish VDP,
and Figure 3 a keyword index list.
It is expected that the definitions can
be based, to a considerable extent,
on the existing IFIP-ICC and USA
Standard vocabularies.
