already dwell in Spain. Palermo drops deep in its
golden horn and disappears; Sicily itself vanishes, the
snowy top of Ætna being the last thing to go down in
the waves.
It is lovely to be sailing; there is nothing but ocean
on all sides as far as the eye can see. Mile after mile
of watery surface passes in under the ship’s bow and
glides out astern, but far off on the horizon new wastes
of water appear as fast as we can eat them up.
Apparently we are making no progress at all, and yet the
ship is jogging along and the screw turning - it must
be something like this to wade through eternity.
The sun rises from the sea and goes down in the sea
day after day. The same sheet of water constantly
moves in under us, blue or mother-of-pearl in color,
indolent, slothful, in long swells which lie across the
watery surface like great sleeping mollusks.
Occasionally, a faint speck appears in the north or
south horizon - a promontory on the coast of
Sardinia or Africa; but its effect is distant, immaterial, by
no means disturbing the impression of an eternity
slowly gliding by.
The Mediterranean!
At times of a sullen green, opaque and viscous, like
molten bottle-glass. Again it shines like an opal in its
pale milk color; or the whole surface breathes hot
indigo. Or, it may be a crystal in its reflections, and so
transparent, so nearly ethereal, that our shadows pass
right through it and distinctly fall upon the glinting
back of a gray shark following us faithfully a few
fathoms down. Great numbers of big jellyfish cruise
in the clear and vibrating element in rhythmic jerks;
silver-scaled fish and long sinuous threads of mucus
