38 DAYS IN THE SUN
All the remarkable qualities possessed by alcohol in
Denmark are assigned in Spain to tobacco. Tobacco
appeases hunger and stimulates the appetite; tobacco
keeps you awake or puts you to sleep; tobacco acts as
a laxative or as an astringent—all depending on your
immediate needs. “Where’s a cigarette?” is what peo-
ple say when some one falls sick, as in our country
they would say, ‘““Where’s some whiskey?’ Moist to-
bacco leaves are spread over cuts and wounds.
The first thing a Spaniard does in the morning after
opening his eyes is to fumble in the dark for a ciga-
rette, kindle it and then stick it to his lower lip. There
it continues to hang, sending aloft its little blue rings of
smoke while he speaks, when he coughs and sneezes,
sometimes even when he eats and drinks. It is the
sacred flame that never dies. Its last spark is the fire
that passes on to kindle a new cigarette; and he resorts
to the cigarette between every two mouthfuls of food.
The cigarette is attached to his lips all day long.
Often he smokes in bed until he falls asleep and wakes
to find the cigarette, ready for lighting, under his nose
the next morning.
It is a mighty poor smoker that will simply puff out
the tobacco smoke in the usual pusillanimous manner.
Any one with pretensions to manhood will exhale the
smoke through his nose as through a discharge pipe;
professional smokers, however, inhale the smoke and
then sit with their mouths open playing the smoke to
and fro with their tongues.
Some persons believe it possible to attack a national
evil by imposing a tax on it. In Spain the right to
supply tobacco has been conferred on a few capitalists,
chiefly foreigners: this is the Tobacco Company, which
