SEVILLE 49
persons that have won the prizes, even though the
amount may in some cases be not more than fifteen
thousand dollars, divided among ten individuals.
These papers have a perfect system of espionage, the
excellence of which is a matter of great pride with
them. No paper in Germany or Denmark that reports
some wretched political trifle one day ahead of its
contemporaries could be more ridiculously proud of
such a scoop than the Spanish paper which has suc-
ceeded in getting the names of the winners ahead of its
rivals. The telegraph system is resorted to, and your
paper may inform you as follows:
Malaga, January 14, 17 o’clock.
Your correspondent in this city has succeeded
in ascertaining that the two tenths of the 75,000
did not fall—as was reported by another news-
paper in the capital—to Coachman Cenizo and
his brother—but to a hotel keeper and his male
servant. There has been no denial of the six
tenths which we succeeded in revealing yesterday.
Of the remaining two tenths, one is said to have
fallen to the lot of a sailor; but we regret that we
have not been able to learn anything about the
second winner.
(Latest telegram) The final tenth—we are
now happy to be able to report definitely—was
won by Policeman Number 14, Don Enrico
Manuel Barato.
In this country, it is not alcohol that piles up jail
‘sentences, but gambling; and most of the penalties im-
posed on prisoners when they transgress the prison
regulations are for gambling.
