faces of peaches and cream with angel curls;
raw-boned,
red-cheeked Englishmen drag their flat feet and bow
legs by the side of dark-eyed Spanish señoritas whose
gait is like the rhythm of music; respectable English
women move about on their respectable feet, either
alone or accompanied by youths in the uniform of
cadets. They impress you as an emanation of beef
and porter; if they do no more than open their para-
sols the action is performed as with a slight explosion
of energy; the indifference in their eyes expresses the
perfect impregnability of the fortress in which they
live.
Their matter-of-fact gait, their gray and brown
dresses, the whole monotonous expression of their
faces, has a painful, almost a stifling effect in this
bright and sparkling sunlight. But they suit well this
armored rock, with its long row of cannons down the
whole length of the promenade with the pyramids of
bombs and shells that adorn the park grounds and
render superfluous other art products fashioned by hu-
man hands. They are on solid ground; their bases are
stone block and cement, in the belly of which is a
second row of cannons, capable of covering the en-
tire sweep of the bay.
Rising above this double row of teeth in the armed
jaws of this monster, the rock attains some fifteen
hundred feet, in the form of a long narrow book that
has been opened a little and set with its back pointing
upward. This rock is accessible from three sides, the
fourth side, which is inaccessible, is made up of rows
of houses, each one with its toes on the necks of the
houses immediately beneath.
But they do not go all the way to the top; the hill
