God knows for what sane end!
You long grateful for the sunlight. Let it burn you
a little, so glad, so delighted with everything and any-
thing would you be to escape from these rocky en-
trails. Everything shines with a strong light—the
landscape, the bay beneath you, with its hundreds of
ships and boats. I look down on their decks; they are
like big toy boats. The naked negroes are simply lit-
tle fly-specks. I can also hear the song of steel and
iron to which I have become hardened during the last
few days. It floats upward to my present height like a
long-drawn-out melodious tremor. The coast batteries
lie dazzling white in the bright sunlight. The
promenade dances along the foot of the cliff with its
long row of guns. The cannons themselves are like
black ants, about to crawl straight over the boulevard
and out into the sea.
The hour of the evening promenade has come; the
broad stream of human creatures is moving over the
road; I can discern red and blue parasols and silver-
mounted saddles—a distinguished company! I glow
with satisfaction that I have not become a worm
doomed to wallow in the earth’s vitals; I turn my
thoughts humbly to the apes that dwell on the summit
above me and decide to pay them a visit.
The trip is a hard one leading you through a number
of guard lines, posted all around the cliff. Finally I
succeed in reaching the top and seating myself
a-straddle on the backbone of the rock. But I can see
no monkeys. They are probably disporting themselves
on the perpendicular rocky wall that faces the Medi-
