to conquer southern Europe, so rich in natural re-
sources and such an excellent field of endeavor for
usurious capital. Although Anglo-Teuton civilization
has as yet done little for its own masses, it is being wel-
comed as it advances toward the south. It is astonish-
ing to observe how much of the characteristically
southern tone has been obliged to give way within the
past few decades to the bias of European industrial-
ism; astonishing to watch this civilization, rooted in
mist and cold, its essence in a thousand substitutes for
sunlight and warmth, as it takes up the combat with
the sun in the sun’s own land.
Industrialism will come out on top. It scatters its
seductive products along its path among the masses,
slowly but surely enmeshes them in its countless little
needs and habits of luxury; imprisons them and fixes
them in the yoke, as it has imprisoned its own people
at home and harnessed them in the traces by per-
petually increasing their external needs.
For us, it has become an unalloyed bliss to see the
number of factory chimneys grow. The nations that
suffer from a fever of overproduction are accepted in
our eyes as the foremost in the world. To them be-
longs progress and therefore the future. Have we not
been so thoroughly imbued with the doctrines of capi-
tal that we all, without exception, are doing its
bidding? Is the Dane or the German, who dutifully
puts in his ten hours daily year in and year out, tend-
ing his machine, is this man essentially more valuable
than the Andalusian who does nothing and yet has
plenty to eat? More valuable in the eyes of capital
no doubt! Your Dane or your German probably has
a nice parlor at home full of bric-a-brac, but never time
