154. DAYS IN THE SUN
remind us of the Old Testament; his plow is a pointed
stick; his wine is trodden by his own heels. But his
tireless diligence and the vigilance of his hands lure
wealth out of the ground. In the rare cases in which
the land belongs to the state, the crown takes its yield,
otherwise the proceeds will flow into the hands of the
lord of the manor. And yet, the Andalusian keeps on
working none the less. He loves the soil.
The only work for which he is not suited is the work
in which he must be incarcerated in a factory and made
a cog in the machinery. He would be an obstinate fel-
low to deal with and would merely be in the way. He
lacks the discipline that is imparted by misfortune and
rough weather; and he hates discipline and submission.
He is glad to give up his seat to the most wretched of
his fellow-mortals. He never makes use of his posi-
tion to set his heel on another’s neck. He raises his
children by kissing and fondling them; nothing but
caresses and kisses. It is a self-willed and unreliable
method of training; but they turn out to be essentially
good men, like himself.
