My cane seemed quite heavy to him and he asked

“No,” I answered; “but the head is of lead. You

The fact that he had had to borrow a second donkey
in addition to his own in order to take us back to
Granada and that he was walking the whole distance
himself in order to permit us to ride; in short, the
fact that he could not think of things enough to do for
us, these things meant for him that I was like a brother
to him. When I got off and tried to oblige him to
take my place on the animal, he declared he was freez-
ing with the cold, and that his physician had ordered
