or stimulating in their effect, or that relieve a sense of
tension; bright perspectives, tall apartments, a sense
of the whole and an enjoyment of petty minor parts.
Everything that begets and maintains life in the world
outside is found counterfeited in this place.
No, it is not counterfeited! It is organically pres-
ent! It has been made into a new concentrated world.
Here the mystery of the vegetable world has been
dissolved into its secret curving lines and interwoven
with the structure of the earth and the vault of heaven
to restore the old unity of the universe. Behind the
most ingenious network of tracery pulsates the purple
hue of blood. It strikes the eye from a thousand
angles, issuing from many points, merely as an indica-
tion, as a symbol, as something on the surface of a
rich unseen undercurrent. Here are the mysterious
aspirations of life, aspirations for that which is above
and beyond, in the most glorious lines and in the purest
blue—the blue of the mid-day sky—that rises forth
from the dark pool of blood. There is a deep indigo
of the night, woven in lines and forms that make the
eye of man gentle and his hands caress. Gold is there
in all its importunate glitter; and high over one of the
apartments there is a dome-like cupola, a vault of
heaven dotted with stars, whose ingenious mosaic re-
flects the profoundest of all follies, man’s abstract
thought.
All that the earth holds of brightness and exultation
is to be found in this magic castle which has so mystic
and bewitching a power to attach the onlooker to the
great world outside, to make him feel that he is a
creature of the universe, the center of its glory. The
