shaking his head; but his eyes continued to have their
delighted look. Then, unable to sit up any more he
crawled back into the little cubicle behind the staircase,
Beppa’s bedroom, and went to bed. Not long after,
we heard them muttering to each other, just as in the
old times.
But the quarrel seemed to increase. Beppa was
scolding and calling names. Pedro painfully coughed
out his words. A few hours later Beppa banged the
door and was off on an errand to town. Then I
heard Pedro calling me very softly, and I went down
to speak to him.
“What was that book of which you spoke before?”
he asked in a whisper. He was freezing; his teeth
were chattering in his mouth.
“The Granada Directory.”
“And was my name really in the book?”
“Yes, and the name of the street, and the number,
and everything.”
“It is remarkable that they should know all this—
you surely aren’t making fun of me, my boy?”
This damp hole had no windows, but there was a
little oil-wick with a flame as big as the head of a
match stick, burning in front of San Antonio’s image.
I could barely distinguish Pedro’s shadowy outlines.
“Oh, I am freezing,” he lisped. “There must be a
lot of snow in the hills. But now go up to your little
wife. What do you think she thinks of old Pedro?
Has she said anything? She surely considers me ill-
bred; but you have known me of old and you know that
Iam sick. If I had been in good health, I— Tell her
that I find her charming and that I kiss her feet! Tell
her that Pedro is not a tactless idiot, but that he would
