SAN ANTONIO 228
clean. His moral code seems more like that of plain
men than that of the sublime saints, and occasionally,
if there has not been oil in his lamp for a long time, he
will hide some needed object in order that he may dis-
tinguish himself by causing it to be found again.
But San Antonio is not the only saint who is sub-
jected to such denunciation and chastisement. The
Andalusian assumes the existence of human weaknesses
even in the gods. In the spring of 1896, the Virgin
Mary was taken from Joseph’s side on a certain occa-
sion and placed by the side of San Cristobal up the hill
back of Albaicin, in order to make Joseph jealous and
thus oblige him to do his duty—at least that was the
explanation offered by the common people.
On one side of Los Campos, a market-place of
Granada, there was a hospital. On the market-place
in front of the hospital stood a stone crucifix bearing
the image of the Crucified. The hospital had been
commended to his special attention and accordingly
he had been placed so as to face the hospital, as was
no more than reasonable. But in the cholera year of
1885 all the patients died, and as a punishment, be-
cause Christ had done his job so poorly, he was made
to face the other way. He still has his back turned
to the hospital.
The true value of San Antonio is not appreciated
until some one steals him. Beppa’s was stolen four
years ago, and her boarding-house began to do badly at
once; but the people that stole him now have lots of
money. San Antonio suffered much on earth, and for
this reason he was made a saint. He was always most
kindly and generous toward those that had treated him
very badly; so he brings most luck to those who steal
