hungry men, sick men, sick men, W. men, jobless
men. In a great demonstration, they march to the
house of the Prefect and shout: “Down with him!”;
they demand food and health and work; they go down
on all fours and bégin to rip up the stones of the pave-
ment. At last they have moved him! He steps out on
his balcony, waves his hand and the masses listen
breathless:
“There will be corridas before the month is over!”
They begin to stir, they speak softly, at last they shout
with joy. No longer are they hungry men, sick men,
jobless men; they have been welded once more into a
happy people. . They scatter with laughter, smiling
and babbling, to the various parts of the town.
But the days pass and the people begin to have mis-
givings and again become restless. Why was the day
not set, so that they may know where they are at?
Does he think the thing can simply be allowed to lapse,
to die of inertia? At last one day! There stands the
first yellow poster, gigantic, on the walls of the City
Hall itself. It’shouts its great word over the market
place in monstrous letters: Corridas! Corridas/—at
last! Already there is a crowd gathered about the
poster and the market-place sucks its crowds from
every adjacent thoroughfare. They come running,
shouting, waving their hands: “When, when does it
come off?”
“On election day!” is the answer.
Three bullfighters are depicted on the poster, life-
size; and behind them is a great steer dripping with
blood. In the four corners of the poster are depicted
small episodes of the arena: a horse prostrate; a duel
between the bull and bullfighter, etc. The onlookers
